Join Dr. Asad Tarsin author of 'Being Muslim' for this one day programme aimed at Imams, students of knowledge, and community stakeholders. Exploring the educational and pastoral needs of converts to Islam.
As our Mosques experience increasing numbers of people embracing Islam, what steps must we take community wide to support the growing numbers of new Muslims in our community?
This programme aims to guide its participants to:
- Explore and understand the evidence based recommendations for community support for Muslim converts, by drawing on 20 years of reports.
- Encourage critical thinking about the care of those new to Islam and what needs improvement.
- Examine what is required of community leadership in the care of new and newly practising Muslims, in a multi-cultural context.

Dr. Asad Tarsin
Student of the Islamic Sciences & Physician
Dr. Asad completed a bachelor’s degree in Islamic studies and then continued his private study of Islamic theology, sacred law, philosophy, and spirituality with various scholars including Shaykh Hamza Yusuf and Dr. Sherman Jackson. He currently serves as a research fellow at Zaytuna College and on the board of the Rihla Program.
He has a particular interest in creating sustainable models of education for new and beginner level Muslims, as well as educating the broader public about the beauty of Islam. “Being Muslim: A Practical Guide” is his first published work. Dr. Asad is an emergency physician by training and lives in Michigan with his family
Salih Whelbourne
Co-Founder, Muallif
Salih became Muslim in the year 2000. After a personal journey of recovery and 20 years of grassroots experience organising support for converts to Islam, he became the Co-founder of Muallif.
He previously worked in the Muslim charity sector as a programme manager and designer. He is a graduating fellow from the School of Social Entrepreneurs. Before entering the charity sector, he completed a bachelor's degree in Contemporary Fine Art, where his practice-led research explored the under-considered connections between Islamic thought and contemporary fine art ideas. He's currently continuing his Islamic studies privately and lives in Nottingham with his family.
